Going To Secondary School
Children move to secondary school at the end of Year 6.
If your child is currently in Year 5 (2025–26), you will apply for their secondary school place for September 2027.
Choosing a secondary school is an important step. Over the coming year you will begin thinking about the next stage of your child’s education. We will share information with families to help you understand the process and support your child as they prepare for the move to secondary school.
Supporting the move to secondary school
We understand that moving to secondary school can feel like a big change for children and families.
Our schools work closely with our secondary school Heron Hall Academy, to support pupils through this transition.
During Years 4, 5 & 6, pupils take part in a range of activities that help them feel prepared and confident about moving to secondary school. These activities help pupils understand what secondary school will be like and give them the opportunity to ask questions and talk about any concerns.
Our aim is to make sure every child feels ready and positive about starting Year 7.

Heron Hall Academy
Our school is part of the North Star Community Trust, and the Trust’s secondary school is Heron Hall Academy.
The school has strong GCSE results and is led by an outstanding headteacher. Heron Hall was also awarded a Bronze award in the Pearson National Teaching Awards Secondary School of the Year competition.
Heron Hall places a strong focus on students being happy and safe with strong pastoral support.
Through its unique and very popular ‘Check-in’ initiative each term we invite the Headteachers of our primary schools to visit their former pupils at Heron.
The school also offers a range of opportunities through our Academy PLUS programme, providing students with more clubs, sports and trips than most other schools.
Many pupils from our primary schools continue their education at Heron Hall, and the schools work closely together to support pupils as they move into Year 7.
Download our A5 guide to moving to secondary.
The school also has a prospectus where you can find out more. (To be published in September)
