A Happy and Confident Start
A Happy Start to School
Starting school is an important moment for children and parents.
Our Reception teachers help children settle in quickly so they feel comfortable and confident at school.
Children make friends, learn new things every day and enjoy coming to school.
Teachers take time to get to know each child so they feel supported and encouraged.
We believe children do best when schools and parents work closely together.
What Children Learn in Reception
In Reception, children begin learning the skills they will use throughout primary school.
Teachers help children learn to read, write and work with numbers. They also develop confidence, communication skills and independence.
During the year, children learn how to:
• recognise letters and sounds through daily phonics
• begin reading simple books
• write letters and simple words
• count and recognise numbers
• solve simple problems
• talk confidently and share their ideas
• work and play with other children
• listen carefully and follow instructions
These early skills help children feel confident and ready to move into Year 1.
Learning Inside and Outside
Reception children learn both inside the classroom and outside.
Reception and Nursery share a play area that is separate from the rest of the school. This helps younger children feel safe as they begin school.
Children spend time outside every day. Outdoor play helps them develop confidence, physical skills and curiosity.
There are many areas for children to explore, including a mud kitchen, reading areas and creative play spaces.
What Our Parents Say
Many parents tell us how happy their children are in Reception. Hearing from other families can help parents understand what the school is like.
